MLK365 invites you to join us for our 32nd Annual March for the Dream on Monday, January 21, 2013. The March for the Dream is a free event that attracts 20,000 Northern Californians from diverse backgrounds who peacefully come together to march, celebrate and to recommit themselves to the universal values of freedom, social justice and equality for all.

You can help us keep the dream of Martin Luther King Jr. alive! With every mile you walk and every dollar you raise, MLK365 is able to host another event, fund another grant and create another school-based program 365 days a year!

OAK PARK COMMUNITY CENTER SACRAMENTO CITY COLLEGE GRANT HIGH SCHOOL

Oak Park Community Center

If you're an early riser and want to walk the full six miles, then you will definitely want to start at Oak Park. The Oak Park Community Center parking lot will be packed with motorcycles, Corvettes, news satellite vans, music coming from everywhere and did I say lots of people. Sacramento City College

If you're committed to the cause and need that extra hour or two of sleep, then you want to begin at Sacramento City College. The City College jump-off has the best available parking, and you can even take the light rail to the City College march. Marching bands, politicians, schools, civic and social groups tend to begin at City College. We're encouraging all banner organizations (groups who register to march) to go out and buy a banner to identify their groups. map & details Back to march details ↑

Grant High School

I think it should be stated once and for all, we have ONE march with three different starting points. Those who start the march at Grant High School are passionate lovers of the north area. They might have graduated from Grant, Highlands or some other north area school. The numbers of people starting at Grant are increasing year-by-year! map & details Back to march details ↑

Volunteering

MLK365 relies on the tireless volunteerism of people like you who help us keep the Dream of Martin Luther King Jr alive. MLK365 volunteers fall into two categories: those who want to serve on committees; those who serve as a "day-of" volunteer.

VOLUNTEER COMMITTEES

The volunteer committees work "long and thankless" hours from concept to implementation of the event. They oversee specific activities and are responsible for the planning, logistics and execution of a specific event/area/aspect taking place usually before, during or after the event.  Committees will often times recruit, celebrate and at time have to motivate volunteers. Planning Committees would include some of the following:

  1. March Committee
  2. Talent Showcase Committee
  3. Volunteer Committee
  4. Media Committee
  5. Security Committee
  6. Hospitality Committee
  7. Village Committee

DAY OF EVENT VOLUNTEERS

"Day of" the event volunteers work on the day of the event only. We strive to accommodate all volunteer interests. All volunteers will need to attend a mandatory volunteer training session prior to the actual day and are responsible showing up on time for their tasks and assignments.  They report directly to the Event Coordinator. Volunteer opportunities may include the following:

  1. March Monitors
  2. Village Support
  3. Ushers/Security
  4. Hospitality
  5. Information

The Convention Center Celebration

The Celebration features all types of cool and very interesting activities for people of all ages. Here, you can meet with employers, healthcare professionals, small business vendors and other social advocates. As our theme is "EDUCATION," teachers from across the region will come together and host an Education Village for young people Kindergarten through Junior High, featuring crafts, face painting, movies, singing and various types of educational resources. If entertainment is your thing, you may want to enjoy our MLK365 Multi-Cultural Talent Showcase of Stars or Dramatic Actors Improv. For those of us who are "young at heart," we host the Wisdom Corner, a place to sit after a six mile march--a place to hear poetry, stories from our past and lessons we'd like to share with the next generation.

 

EMPLOYMENT, HEALTH AND EDUCATIONAL VILLAGES / ARTS AND CRAFTS VENDORS

10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Come and meet employers; get health screenings, connect with human services agencies on site to provide resource information.  Don't forget to bring some money so you can support our sponsors and vendors who will be showcasing their products and services!

EDUCATION VILLAGE

education-villageCome join us on the main floor of the exhibit hall in the Education Village! You'll enjoy exciting exhibits, movies, children's artwork, and fun-filled, hands-on activities and meet other students!

  • learning support dictionaries, thesauruses
  • educational resources and positive encouragement books

MULTI-CULTURAL TALENT SHOWCASE OF STARS

1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. - Performers not needed, Talent Showcase is fully booked. Thank you!

DRAMATIC ARTS ENSEMBLE

1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Perhaps, you're a professional or amateur actor and would like to volunteer your talents as a cast member of an ensemble of actors to educate and entertain under the direction of William Parker and his Parker's Place. WISDOM CORNER/POETRY

For seniors who need a place relax after a six mile march and would like to participate in the activities, welcome to the Wisdom Corner!  Here, seniors can relax and hear poetry and music, see videos and reminisce about the historic civil rights movement and its many achievements. No reservation necessary. We'll save you a chair! 

VISUAL ARTS

Under the direction of Veronica Delgado, our Art Village features varied works of local artists who would love very much for you to visit and perhaps purchase something from their collection!
